GPT 4o mini now live

dypt now uses OpenAI's new GPT 4o mini model as our basic model.

This model provides far more intelligent and helpful suggestions for your tasks and projects. It's a significant improvement over the previous model, and we're excited to see how it helps you manage your tasks more effectively.

  • On the dashboard, time estimates are now shown for just underlying subtasks to avoid 'double counting'
  • When you first open the actual tab of the time taken dialog, it's now preset with the estimated time as a starting point
  • Tweaked the 'quick set' time options on the time dialog

Time tracking

Today's update includes the next feature for dypt, time tracking. This feature allows you to track the time you spend on tasks.

Time tracking is available on all plans, including the free plan.

Estimates and actuals

You can set estimates on subtasks, and see the aggregated time to complete your tasks trickle up through your hierarchy.

For tasks that have an estimate set, when you complete them, you'll be asked to confirm the time you spent on them. This will help you get a better idea of how long tasks take, and help you plan your time better in the future.

Filters and dashboard

You can now apply filters on estimated time values, allowing you to easily see the tasks that can be completed in a certain amount of time.

For ease, these are also shown on the dashboard, click on one of the boxes to apply that time filter.

AI estimates

You can also use AI to make approximate estimates as to how long it thinks each task will take to get you started.

"AI breakdowns" have been rebranded to "AI credits" as I expand the AI functionality of dypt into more than just breaking down tasks. Your plans have the same number of credits as before, and like with breakdowns you can choose which model to use for speed or accuracy.

AI time estimates use 1 credit per generation. This means that if you estimate multiple tasks at once, you'll still only use 1 credit.

Future plans

This is the first iteration of time tracking, and we'll be improving and expanding its capabilities in the future. If you have any feedback, please let us know.

By default, dypt will match whatever you have your system theme set to.

If you want to change it, you can do so by pressing the theme button at the top of the screen (a ☀️ or 🌙 icon).

This also opens the door for many more themes in the future, but I'll keep it simple for now whilst I work through any display issues that may arise.

If you're a light mode fan, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the new theme 😌

Lower prices

The main change today is that I have significantly lowered the prices of the dypt Pro & VIP plans.

Prices are as much as 40% lower than before, and truly represent great value for money. I hope this will make it easier for more people to access the fantastic premium features of dypt.

As before, dypt offers substantial discounts for annual plans and for a limited time, you can save another 10% by using the code EARLYBIRD.

For existing premium subscribers... I truly appreciate you being early supporters of dypt and I want to make sure you're rewarded accordingly. Here's what I've done for you:

  • You've been automatically moved to the lower pricing tier for future payments
  • You keep any discounts you previously had
  • I've added a credit to your account to make up for the difference between the price you paid and the new prices. This will reduce the cost of your next payment even further and should appear on the subscription user settings page in the next few days

Other changes:

  • Fixed an issue that prevented the month and year dropdowns from opening on the day picker dialog
  • Fixed unsubscribe link in email footer not working on some emails

Bug fixes

  • You will now recieve a renewal reminder email 3 days before your renewal payment is due
  • Fixed a bug that caused tasks to be duplicated on daily/weekly emails
  • Refined language behaviour of AI responses when breaking down tasks
  • Fixed a bug that could lead to a 404 whilst completing the onboarding guide

New drag mode and swipe gestures

A fairly large update today which dramatically improves how dragging works in dypt and introduces swipe gestures. Both of these changes are designed to offer a more native app like experience and improve the 'feel' of dypt.

Drag mode updates

Previously when you clicked/touched and held a task to drag it, blue 'spacer' boxes would appear in between tasks to show where you could place the task to reorder. This was a bit clunky and created a shift in the position of existing tasks which could feel disorientating.

Now, when you drag a task, no spacers appear and instead the existing tasks will move out of the way to make space for the task you're dragging. This should make it much easier to see where you're placing the task and make it feel more like a native app.

As before you can still drag tasks on top of other tasks to move them under those tasks as subtasks but now you'll see it animates, changes colour and shrinks to show you're moving it under another task. Additonally, when you start moving tasks under another task, the task header bar will now change to a droppable area to allow you to move the task up a level.

Swipe gestures

You can now swipe left or right on a task to perform certain actions. Swiping a task to the right will archive a task and swiping a task to the left will delete.

This should make it much easier to quickly archive or delete tasks without having to open the task menu first. It works on both mobile and desktop, but feels particularly nice on mobile.

Expand/collapse all subtasks

You can now expand or collapse all subtasks by clicking the expand/collapse icon in the task header or by pressing Shift+X.

Other changes

  • If you have expanded the subtasks under a task and navigate to a different task, when you return to the original task the subtasks will still be expanded
  • Buttons have labels on mobile when viewed in landscape mode
  • Fixed a bug that meant you sometimes had to click a task twice to mark it as complete
Tuesday June 04, 2024

Improvements & bug fixes

  • Fixed a bug that forced the basic model to be used on the starter plan
  • The AI will now respond in the same language as your request, if possible. This should provide a much better experience for non-English speakers
Monday June 03, 2024

Improvements & bug fixes

  • Fixed a bug that prevented users on the starter plan from changing the AI model back to advanced after switching to basic
  • Enable notifications popup will now wait 60 seconds before appearing
  • Changed "App" text to "Sign In" to be more recognisable to more people
  • Adjusted spacing of header buttons on smaller desktop screens to prevent overflow
  • Made popover task menu appear on top of onboarding steps
  • Changed text on button to show/hide task status pill details to be more descriptive
Wednesday May 22, 2024

Improvements

Several small improvements:

  • When viewing the dypt calendar on mobile, if you rotate your device to landscape, task details will now be displayed under each day as opposed to the dots that are shown on portrait (due to space constraints)
  • You can now delete tasks from the edit task dialog, this means that you can delete tasks without having to go up a level
  • On the add and edit task dialogs, you can now click the title button OR the current value to trigger editing that value (e.g. parent, priority, deadline, etc)
Tuesday May 21, 2024

Improved AI and advanced mode for the starter plan

Several exciting updates today:

  • dypt now utilises the latest GPT-4o AI model for improved results and query speed. You should find that the results are more accurate and faster than before with text and vision based queries
  • users on the free starter plan now also get 5 advanced queries each month as well as the 25 basic queries they already have
  • when you run out of queries, dypt will automatically switch your selected intelligence level assuming you have queries remaining on the other level
  • when you initiate an AI action, the toasts are more informative and helpful

In other news, to improve the quality and helpfulness of the app, I've added analytics tracking. This will allow me to see how the app is being used and where improvements can be made. Analytics are collected anonymously and do not contain any personal information.

I've updated dypt's privacy policy to reflect this change.

Other changes:

  • Fixed a bug on the homepage that may have appeared in the console
  • Added the close button back to the drop down menu when the menu is open
Friday May 17, 2024

Bug fixes and quality of life improvements

  • Search dialog is now autofocused on the input box for faster searching
  • Pressing 'r' now opens the repeat dialog, use 'Shift + r' to change rows
  • Pressing 's' now opens the share dialog
  • Fixed a bug that prevented opening the add task dialog with Ctrl+Enter
  • Fixed a bug that prevented you from stopping repeats via the repeat dialog
  • The changes you make are now rate limited to prevent abuse. The limits are generous so you shouldn't notice them as a normal user, please let me know if you do.

Better error messages when something goes wrong

I've been hard at work behind the scenes working to clean up and simplify how dypt works under the hood.

Lot's of changes have been made, but the one that will visible is the addition of better reporting. If something goes wrong, you'll now see a popup toast explaining what happened. This should make it easier to understand what's going on and how to fix it.

Other changes:

  • Typo fixes
  • Copy tweaks
Friday May 03, 2024

Error tracking

In order to improve the stability of the app, I've added error tracking to help identify and fix issues more quickly. This will allow me to provide a more reliable experience for you.

Errors are collected anonymously and do not contain any personal information.

I've updated dypt's terms and privacy policy to reflect this change.

Other changes:

  • Fixed a bug that caused a brief refresh when performing your first change
  • Changed data/compute locations to be geographically paired for better performance
Saturday April 27, 2024

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a notifications bug with iOS that caused notifications to be disabled when you clicked on them
  • Reminders are now processed more frequently meaning you'll receive them closer to the time you set
  • Fixed a bug that prevented shared icons from appearing against tasks

Friday April 26, 2024

Tuesday April 23, 2024

Tweaks and bug fixes

  • You can now toggle the status info pills from the task list header menu (flag icon) as well as in settings
  • If a dropdown preview is opened for an archived task, it will now also display archived subtasks. Unarchived dropdown previews will continue to return only active subtasks
  • Fixed active count in task summary table
  • Fixed filtered and archived counts messages at bottom of task list
Monday April 22, 2024

Drop down task preview and more

The biggest change today is per a user feedback request. I've added drop down previews of subtasks which means that you can now choose to see any given task's subtasks inline on the same page.

This is useful for quickly checking what a task contains without having to navigate to the task page; or if you want to see the status of several tasks at once.

To use this feature, click the down arrow next to a task to expand it. You can also use the keyboard shortcut 'x' to expand the subtasks of the currently selected task.

I really appreciate and consider all the feedback I get, so if you have any other suggestions or requests, please let me know.

Other changes today:

  • Rejigged how status indicators appear and moved them to their own space underneath tasks on mobile. I felt like things were getting too busy with additional features/indicators, so this change is designed to offer a little 'breathing room'
  • You can also now choose to show/hide status indicator pills in user settings. They are on by default, but you can turn them off if you prefer a cleaner look
  • Fixed a bug that caused the wrong toast alert when editing tasks via the edit task dialog
  • Fixed a bug that stopped the app updating after you deleted a user from a private shared task
Friday April 19, 2024

Info toasts and bug fixes

The main change today is one I've been wanting to make for a while: adding info toast alerts to the app. These are small, non-intrusive messages that appear at the bottom of the screen to provide information or context.

For example, when you generate tasks with AI, you'll now see an info alert telling you that tasks are being generated and then another alert when the generation is complete.

You'll also now see alerts when something went wrong, like if a task couldn't be saved or a user invite couldn't be sent.

I've tried to add these in a way that's helpful but not annoying. Generally, you will see them for longer running / more impactful changes and not for every little thing. If you have any feedback on them, please let me know!

Other changes today:

  • Added a feature page on task repeats
  • Fixed several bugs that caused multi mode updates to fail
Wednesday April 17, 2024

Docs, blog post and bug fix

  • Added a new blog post on task repeats
  • Added a documentation page on task repeats
  • Added repeats per plan to the pricing table
  • Fixed a bug that caused deadlines to be rolled forward incorrectly
Tuesday April 16, 2024

Repeats now available for all plans

You can now create task repeats on all plans, including up to 3 on the free plan. Repeats allow you to automatically create new tasks based on a schedule you define. For example, you can setup a repeat to create a new task every Monday, or every 3 days. See the previous change log entry for more details repeats. The dypt home page and docs will be updated soon with much more detail.

Other changes:

  • You can now set an option to automatically archive previous tasks in the series when creating a repeat
  • All include options (e.g. subtasks, notes etc) now default to on when creating a repeat
  • Corrected display issues with the repeat dialog on mobile
  • Fixed an error that prevented toggling shared tasks on the dashboard
  • Reverted tooltips to click instead of hover as they were causing issues on mobile
  • Prevented the push notification setting from toggling when you first open the settings page

  • Fixed a bug that prevented setting the "Save to" task when creating a new repeat
  • Weekly / daily emails now ignore completed tasks when providing breakdowns
  • When inviting a user by username to share a task, the username is now case-insensitive
  • dypt will now prevent you from creating a task repeat on a task that is already repeating
  • When copying an archived task, the newly created task will now be unarchived
Thursday April 11, 2024

Task repeats and timezone support

This is the beta launch of the next major feature for dypt: task repeats.

You can now set tasks to repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. The repeat options are incredibly flexible and allow you to customise the repeat pattern to suit your exact needs.

Want a task to repeat every 2 weeks on a Monday and Wednesday? No problem. Need a task to repeat on the last Friday of every month? Easy.

What's more you can choose what exactly repeats about the task. You can repeat just the task itself, or the task and all its subtasks and notes. This allows you to create complex repeating tasks that include all the information you need.

You can also choose exactly where newly created tasks are placed. You can have them created in the same list as the original task, or in a different list. This allows you to keep your lists clean and organised.

Initially the repeat options are only available to pro and vip users whilst we gather feedback and make any necessary changes. However, I plan to roll out the feature to all users in the coming weeks.

As part of this update I've also added timezone support. Timezones are automatically set based on your device's timezone, but you can change this in user settings if you need to. This allows you to set due dates and times in your local timezone and have them automatically adjust if you travel.

It also means that daily and weekly emails are now sent at the correct time for all timezones.

I hope you enjoy these new features and I look forward to hearing your feedback. If you have any questions or suggestions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

  • New help menu in settings with links to restart the tour, watch the original video tutorials, and visit the docs

Sunday November 19, 2023

General settings

Updates have been a little slower over the last week.

I've mainly been working on setting up a company for dypt, which should allow me to bring some great new features in the near future.

More to follow on that soon.

I have done some development too though, creating the beginings of a general settings page. You've always been able to manage your account (e.g. username, email, password etc), but now you can also manage your dypt app settings.

The first of the settings you can customise are:

  • The default number of tasks per page: to date you have been able to change this on the fly, but it wasn't persisted between sessions. Now you can set it once and it will be applied every time you open dypt.
  • The first day of the week: which will be used to determine the order of days in the calendar views. This is useful if you want to see the week starting on a Monday rather than a Sunday.

You can find the new settings on the dypt user page which is accessible by clicking on your profile picture.

I'll be adding many more things you can customise in the weeks to follow.

Wednesday November 08, 2023

Terms of service & privacy policy

Today I've added terms of service and a privacy policy to the dypt website.

The new dypt terms of service describes the terms and conditions you agree to when using dypt. You can find it at dypt.app/terms.

Privacy is incredibly important to me so I take your privacy seriously and want to keep you informed. The new dypt privacy policy describes how dypt collects, uses and shares your personal information. You can find it at dypt.app/privacy.

I've tried to keep both as simple as possible though these things never are in practice.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Tuesday November 07, 2023

Thursday November 02, 2023

Keeping you in the loop - first of the reddit feedback updates

As the dypt community grows, I'm getting lots of feedback on how to improve the app. This is fantastic but I'm conscious that with the exception of major new feature blog posts, I've quietly updated the site without letting anyone know. With more active users, that feels unfair and potentially confusing.

So I'm going to start posting updates here so that you can see what's recently changed and to provide context on why it's changed.

I recently shared dypt on reddit and got some great feedback. I've been working on some of the suggestions and here's the first of many updates to come from it:

  • Allowed users to set a password for their account for email login (instead of just using a magic link)
  • Made it clearer that when you use AI to generate tasks, they become subtasks of the selected task and not new tasks on the current page
  • Allowed setting the number of tasks per page to a minimum of 5 (instead of 10) for those that want to avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed
  • Increased the padding and general visual size of each task to make your tasks feel less cluttered
  • Added a "Saving..." indicator to the notes panel to make it clearer that notes are saved on the fly
  • Added a button to allow for obvious navigation away from the account settings page
  • Added a step indicator to the tutorial so you know how far along you are

I hope you like the changes so far. If you have any feedback, please let me know. I'm always happy to hear from you.
